I'm going to start by stating that I don't eat steak...but being that I live in Philadelphia I've had many a chicken cheese steak and Mama's has the best! I always get the chicken cacciatore sandwich when I'm here, which is a chicken cheese steak with mushrooms, peppers, onions and tomatoes. So delicious! Every bite is like greasy food heaven! My sister and boyfriend rave about the cheese steak so I know that's good too. The sandwiches are huge...enough for two meals, so don't be alarmed by the $11 price tag, because it's well worth it! I highly recommend this place!

This place cooks cheese steaks to perfection. The huge steak is not only delicious, but a great value: under $10 for one cheese steak feeds two easily. It is deliciously seasoned, with generous amounts of cheese (I recommend the provolone). I also recommend getting it with the grilled onions. The only problem: the number of calories it contains.

Way back in the 80s, I lived in Manayunk commuting to West Philly for grad school. Other than the local steakeries, like Sip 'n Steaks, there was a fierce following among the Polish and Italian neighbors (remember this was before gentrification) after Mama's Pizzeria. This was no ordinary steak: the meat was ethereally tender and the portions of meat and the cheese that encased the meat were enormous. I often wondered then how they got the meat so tender. I didn't think any cut of beef could survive a shredding and thorough cooking without incurring some toughness. Tenderizers? Baking soda marinade (an old Chinese restaurant trick)? Not sure, but as a starving grad student on stipend, what mattered was hunger satiation and man, did those cheese steaks ever do the job. Now as a father, with cholesterol and a waistline to manage, such indiscretions come sporadically, but tonight, with an hour to burn before the Fabulous Philadelphians play the Mann, and with a date opportunity at hand, the wife and I decided to thumb our noses at the usual audience fare (tabbouleh salad with feta) and haul in a Mama's regular with sauce, onions and mushrooms. I'm sure our neighbors were amused with our lowbrow dinner, perhaps more apropos at First Citizens, but I was not going to let that stop me from strolling down memory lane. Unfortunately, while the volume of meat was what I remembered, the quality was no better than some lunch corners: dry, grisly and stringy. Not the steak sandwich of my youth. Neither the sauce, onions nor mushrooms, which were sparse, helped my disappointment. Hoping this is an anomaly. I stared longingly at my neighbor's tabbouleh.

Mama's makes the Platonic ideal of cheesesteak. Somehow, they have divined the golden ratio of cheese to meat, grease to lean, onions to spice, and crusty to chewy. The music of the spheres is channeled through a sandwich the size of my calf, and served up in a magical floral-wallpapered living room. Come in on a cold evening and bask in the glow.

If you've been here and say "this place cooks cheese steaks to percection" I suspect that you haven't been 2.1 miles away to Dalessandros. My review would be long winded ... with details of why the meat needed more seasoning and that it was too greasy ... how the cheese was just layered on top leaving a soaked, disgusting mess ... but my 11 year old cheesesteak conneseur summed it up best "The meat isn't right." Now, I will tell you their pizza is some of the best I have ever had ... but that got the review up to a 2 ...

We hadn't been to Mama's in a while, and I decided to try a meatball sandwich instead of getting a cheesesteak. I just thought I'd let you all know that the meatball sandwich was fantastic, but I kept on trying to steal the fiance's cheesesteak... so next time I think I'll just stick to the obviously-best thing on the menu. The meatball sandwich WAS great though. I love their bread. And I got a "mini" which was definitely NOT very "miniature" in any way except the price. Great deal. Last but not least, I tried my friend's pizza too, and it was not bad!

Mmmmmmm, so good that when I eat it my veins clog a bit with it's fat so that every part of me has a chance to enjoy the goodness at a leisurely pace. Normal people split these behemoths, but try to touch mine and my next bite will be topped with fingers. They only accept cash here, and like many good unhealthy eateries they have a funky schedule for opening. For those of you who don't, I suggest always ordering salt and pepper on your steaks because nothing let's that flavor sing like a little sodium, and it seems no one adds it on there own because they think I am as health conscientious as they are; I am not. Some of you may want to ask for light cheese, but you're probably splitting the manwich anyway. Come with an appetite for meat and cheese, because you will get it. They have pizza too, I hear, and I guess that's why they picked their name, but I only come for the carnivore in me. Seriously, it's like two pounds.

ONE AND DONE My wife and I were in the area when we came across mamas. We walked inside to find three places to sit but it was so hot up front that us and apparently everyone else choose the back dining area. As we went to sit down in the 2/3 full room I made eye contact with the waiter. This apparently was not enough to get menus because after 10 minutes a guy at another table directed the waiter over to us. After we had gotten our menus I flagged down the waiter to place the drink order, when I asked about the ice tea I was told that everything is a bottle (really!!???!! No fountain drinks). So we both opted for the overpriced 1.85 a bottle of soda. Then moved our menus to the edge of the table. That apparently wasn't enough a hint to the waiter because he dropped off the sodas and took off. I then told my wife beware of the surroundings, not only was the tablecloth cut in numerous areas, the curtain, windowsill, and the fake flowers on the windowsill were all stained with ska. As we waved down our waiter to place the order I watched him deliver the wrong sand which to a customer. Finally placing our order my wife opted for the chicken cheese steak mini, I decided on the meatball sandwich. I was not about to pay 12.60 for the cheese steak sand which. Our food has finally arrived, and to the right table. My wife says her sandwich is OK but I am befuddled, both plastic baskets have the same size undercooked dough ball roll. Like I said she ordered the mini and I ordered the full size. One bite into mine and I was done with that roll, I mean really why not just put a two pieces of crust together inflate it with air and call it Mama's roll. I decided not to make a total loss so I figured I would take out the meatballs cut them up and eat that. Wrong again!! The meatballs (all 3 of them) were already sliced into 1/4 inch pieces, then it dawned on me they have to do it this way in order to spread the meat across the over sized dough ball. If they tried to put whole meatballs on the roll they would either, 1) be lost in the roll or 2) would have to actually have five or six meatballs to make it a sand which. I won't be seeing any of you at mama's. As far as I'm concerned Mama's should be thrown from the train.

BEST Cheesesteaks around hands down - I found out about these cheesesteaks a few years ago. I live in NJ but have family in PA and when we visit there is nothing like a Mama's Cheesesteak. Sure the place is tiny, but we were always able to get seating, and their hours are a little strange so call ahead, but other then that once you eat a mama's cheesesteak, you won't want one from anywhere else. Awesome crusty tasty bread, great juicy meat, and yes LOTs of cheese - this steak is for the cheese lover. Its not gross cheese whiz, but REAL cheeses, blend of Provolone and not sure what else but its simply the best. I like mine with Raw onions and their garlic peppers. It is a large and rich sandwich, so if its too much just order the mini. BUT I suggest the large, and if its too much they reheat great in the oven wrapped in foil. Trust me, you will want the rest later. Definatly worth checking this place out!

The dining room feels like I'm at home in some old Italians house. The steaks are great but the root beer is flat.

As has been mentioned, from a cheesesteak perspective TOO MUCH CHEESE, and BLAND cheese at that. Also, rolls taste like they are made of Pizza dough. Meat is plentiful, but bland. If you want a REAL cheesteak, go to John's Roast Pork in S. Philly. If you are stuck on the Main Line, go to Dakota's Pizza in Wynnewood (or needs a beer w/ your steak, go to the Greeks in Narberth.) I'll have to try their pizza. I live within walking distance. I will never go there for a cheesesteak, however, and I KNOW cheesesteaks !!!

Best cheesesteak in Philadelphia region, tied for first only with Two Fat Guys in Colmar. I don't know how anyone could have a cheesesteak at Mama's and not agree! I made cheesesteaks at another place all through college and I have tried almost every "Best in Philly" cheesesteak and they do not come close to this place.. Ignore any review that disagrees and try one for yourself! The only thing I hate about Mama's is that they are not open everyday! Great stop when taking 76 to a game or home from work. Call ahead as the steaks take a while.

First thing first. If you try to compare a Mama's cheesesteak to Geno's or Pat's then please move to another world. They are two completely different things. Pat's and Geno's to me are nothing short of ok. yeah whatever. they are a philly tradition blah blah...keep talking. That is not my kind of tradition. The steaks at Mama's are huge. Really huge and I believe the cheese literally touches every single piece of meat in the sandwich. The roll is unreal as well. If the roll sucks then the cheesesteak sucks. Plus, there is no such thing as wiz there which is a huge plus. The only drawback to Mama's is the hours.

Well, you would t hink I would listen to my own review. I was visiting the old neighborhood last Saturday afternoon, and decided to take my 14 year old son, (5'11", 185lbs), who has a HUGE appetite, to Mama's for a cheesesteak. Paul, the owner was there behind the counter, looking (like yours truly) a lot worse for the wear after 40 years of making and eating cheesesteaks. We sat down in the the tiny "dining room" in the back, and a very friendly young woman took our order. We ordered two regular cheese steaks, with onions, and the house cheese, with hot peppers. 15 minutes later, out came two foot long cheese steaks that weighed close to two pounds each. So much oil came out of the cheese that the fresh hoagie roll got soaked, and I had to use a knife and fork. The quality was fine, but there was so much cheese, which melted in to the meat, that the meat's taste was lost. I only mangaged to finish half. My son killed the entire steak, along with a bag of barbecued chips.... Minutes later, he fell into a deep sleep on on the ride back to New York. An hour later, I had to pull over, buy a Red Bull, and drink it so I could continue driving without falling asleep. N ex t time I will head to D'Allessandro's or Chubby's. But there is stil room in my heart for Mama's hoagies, tuna hoagies, and ..........the "mini cheese steak ", just for old time's sake.

The cheesiest cheesesteaks in the Philadelphia area, but if you look past the tasty provolone blend you'll find delicious, tender meat that deserves special mention. I've never found it tough or detected any hint of gristle, which is more than I can say for most of the famous cheesesteaks dens I've visited. Just try to ignore the terrible grandmotherly decorating scheme.

I came here because Jane and Michael Sterns of Road Food said that their cheesesteak was the best in Philly. It was good, very different from Genos, but I still wondered if I would suffer a heart attack while driving home. There were 4 of us and we ordered 2 sandwiches to split, as they cost $8 a piece, which I found much too expensive for what we were ordering. What we got was about a pound of meat on each sandwich with almost an equal amount of cheese. I tried to blot the grease out of the inside of the sandwich in a futile effort to make it a little less detrimental to my health, but it didn't work too well. It was an interesting experience, but I don't know if I would drive all the way out there for that again.

One of my favorite cheesesteak places in the area. Pizza is okay, nothing great. Odd hours, spotty service, but awesome cheesesteak.

Totally I.
Lets start by saying that a fair number of people don't like Mama's cheese steaks. Then let's move on because those people are idiots. Honestly, there are relatively few cheese steak places that out-class (or out-something) all the others. I have an affinity for Dalessandro's for some unknown reason (I can't figure out anything special they've got going on there - in fact it seems just the opposite - but yet I go, I eat, I enjoy) but we're not here for them right now. Jim's has that smell that settles over 4th and South like a greasy haze beckoning the passer-by (sometimes successfully when I'm stupid drunk at midnight and see all those 'geniuses' -they must be, right?- waiting in that long line that snakes out the door for way-overpriced steaks). Don't even get me started on Pat's and Geno's -Like America has been doing since world war II, cruising on the good will of long past triumphs, these places haven't put effort in or gotten decent cheese-steaky returns in decades (if in the neighborhood, get a taco). Anyway, Mama's does a mean steak, unique in the one place where you'd think all the bases were covered on the cheese steak spectrum. It goes like this, enormous roll, which holds the mass of real, recenlty cooked (or deceptively well maintained) meat and a smothering, and then another smothering of some preselected cheese. Ignore, the people who say 'It's gotta be whiz!" They're the same type of people who don't like Mama's... Idiots. They cost more than the typical cheese steak (even more than Jim's) but they are for two (people, meals, or coronaries). I was turned on to this place by Big Steve G. who was either big because he would stop at Mama's on his way into work and get a cheese steak for breakfast or would stop in the morning for the steak because he was so big. He's done did me a service that I shall remember until the day I die (which will be sooner because of that service been done did).

Mamas Pizzeria is anything but how they claim to be on their website. "Our goal has been to ensure the complete satisfaction of every customer - and meet all of your expectations and know that our customers are always our number one priority." Completely false! I have never encountered such a contradiction. When I happily called a month in advance to reserve a 10 person table, celebrating a birthday party and a family reuniting under the roof of their favorite childhood restaurant since the late 50s I was astonished by the brush-off I was delivered over the phone. When I expected to hear something like "that is wonderful" and "we are looking forward to seeing you again!" Instead the answer was "There is nothing I can do, you will have to wait and see IF you get a table." What!? Thinking this may have been the dumb girl gatekeeper answer I asked to speak to the owner. Sadly, the answer was the same. I was heartbroken. Clearly they do not want your business and to hell with your family.

Best cheesesteak in philly isn't in philly, but rather just off the Mainline in Bala Cynwyd. The place is unassuming and on a busy suburban road so I have primarily taken the food out. The cheesesteak is a generous helping with plenty of cheese on a warm, large roll. It's just so succulent and satisfying. The service can be a bit slow because its often made fresh to order, unlike some of the higher volume places in the city. Additionally, they offer up a decent pizza (being born in NY has made me a pizza snob) and stromboli. Those items nothing grand, but better than the places found in this area. The Manayunk bridge will reopen any month now. This means people in Manayunk should be walking over to grab cheesesteaks. The walking will be needed because these things are huge.

Mama's cheesesteak is one of THE BEST in Philadelphia (see also Dalessandro's). We ordered a mini to split between two people and it was incredibly satisfying. I would caution someone who thinks they can take down an original on their own. Hell, a mini might even be too much for one person. The bread was fresh and there were several different types of cheese on the sandwich. The cheese is on top of the meat rather than between the meat and bread like most cheesesteaks. They've got something good going on here. Make it a priority to try it if you haven't yet.

Maybe my favorite cheesesteak, and I am a lifetime Philadelphian. Never had anything else there, but have had many cheesesteaks. Pure bliss. Oh, and the restaurant itself is a hole in the wall... But who cares? Mmmmm, Mama's.

There are a few styles of cheesesteaks in Philly and Mama's is THE BEST in it's genre, which is the HUGE, chopped style. In this category they absolutely slay the competition. In fact, Mama's is in a category of it's own and is probably the best in Philly, PERIOD. I switch it up with Steve's, John's and a few others here and there but you cannot beat Mama's. Ask for long hots on your steak! Be prepared for a nap after - one you might not wake up from. Listen, I am a cheesesteak connoisseur - MAMAS IS THE BEST!!! Go right now!!!

I literally took a day trip to Philly just to eat a real cheesesteak! WOW. Super friendly people here. I forget the woman's name (her brother's name is the same as mine), but she was so nice! Anyway, COME HERE! The cheesesteaks here are mouth watering! I'm salivating as I type this. I ordered an extra to-go just so I could have that flavor in my mouth again. The meat, the cheese, the everything!

Seeing that mamas has 4 stars on yelp we decided to give it a try. We ordered a large plain pizza for take out. When we got home and started digging in, we found the bread was extremely soggy from so much oil from the overload of cheese they pack on to their pizza. This made eating very messy with cheese sliding and clumping together while the soggy bread not able to support this mess. Also they could really cut back on the salt for their pizza. Way too salty Maybe cheesesteaks is the thing to get at this pizza shop May give that a try sometime.

I was extremely excited to try Mama's. Many friends and review sites spoke highly of the restaurant. Unfortunately, their food was overhyped and the shop ripped me off and was extremely rude about it. When I called, I openly admitted it was my first time ordering. I placed an order for a stromboli and 2 cheesesteaks. I even asked about sizes on both and the guy on the phone said nothing, claiming they were "average" size. The guy told me it would be an hour. I ordered at 7:30 on a Friday night, figuring I'd miss the dinner rush. It seemed a little long so I went to confirm this and he coldly responded "What else do you expect". Rude, I figured, but maybe he's busy. If only that were the truth. Instead the extremely rude demeanor continued when I arrived to get my food. When I got there, I was not even greeted by anyone. The guy barked "NAME". I told him my name and then he told it would be $51. I immediately questioned him on it. He said "yeah you ordered a Stromboli". He didn't mention that a stromboli costs $21.75, unless you specify you want the "small" one. He refused to apologize and simply said "PAY OR LEAVE". Everyone else on the wait staff looked on in absolute silence. Eventually the manager gave me a menu on the way out and said "Maybe you won't make a mistake next time" as he smiled at me, as if he took delight in ripping me off. When I took it home, the stromboli was awful with soft, undercooked dough coating the middle. Further, it contained mostly bread, little cheese, and worst of all - no pepperoni. For $21, I better get an entire butcher's shop of pepperoni. This had one thin layer above the undercooked dough in the middle. As for the cheesesteaks, they were passable. There is a lot of cheese, which I am not a fan of. The flavor of the meat was overpowered by the excessive cheese. I also didn't taste a single onion, which is my favorite part. Definitely not the best in the Philadelphia area as some have claimed, but also not the worst. Ultimately I will never go here again - Long Wait, Miserable Service that blatantly took advantage of me, and a Stromboli that can only be described as the worst I've ever had. I have nothing positive to say about the experience and I highly recommend no one patronize this business.

I will continue to look for the best cheesesteaks in the philly area. These were huge cheesesteaks but not the best. The cheesesteak was also a little pricey in my opinion. Almost $15 for an original cheesesteak

I came up to Philly to visit family and my uncle ordered some Philly Cheesesteaks from Mama's. They are fantastic! They are so big I made 2 meals out of one sandwich. Piping hot, great cheese and meat and stuffed with yummy onions and peppers. Can't go wrong there!

The cheesesteaks are huge and very tasty. The fresh rolls, cheese blend and substantial portion of beef are hallmarks of this tasty Main Line favorite. Pizza is also good... I've taken out food from here dozens of times in recent years and have never been disappointed.

Came here for a cheesesteak and FYI they are huge. Get a mini it's 2/3 the size of the regular. The weird part- it's table service in the back. You walk up the stairs and are sent back to the 80s with the decor in their 'dining area'. The wait staff is terrible. They don't clean the tables, they don't pay attention to you, if you order drinks you'll wait 20 minutes for food and then an additional 10 for drinks. If you ask for anything they're really offended. The food was good, the service terrible, I expected the atmosphere/ambience to be poor (and it met expectations). I wouldn't recommend it.

I'll start off my saying they do not have the best cheesesteaks in Philadelphia. The redeeming quality about this place was the pizza because I love anchovies and not many places serve so many on a slice. Unfortunately their service is awful. We walked in and it was our first time so we weren't sure where to sit or order. The woman at the register didn't care she just kept talking to another employee. Finally we asked where we should place our order and she told us there are tables in the back. The decor is so awful and falling apart that you would think they could have at least bought new tablecloths. It was also summer and the room was hot. The waitress was extremely rude and looked angry when we asked for more napkins. The food also took a long time to get to our table despite there being only another couple there.

This is the Philadelphia Cheesesteak. The only one for me. I've been lucky enough to have cut my teeth here. However, 42 years later they still rock. And more. Put on seatbelts! !! This is what you've been waiting for!!!

ordered takeout for our entire office from here upon our boss's recommendation. WOW - i was blown away! he recommended the chicken cheesesteak with toasted bun. i didn't get my bun toasted (i should have as it got a bit soggy from all the cheese) but nonetheless - this was THE best chicken cheesesteak i have ever had. i don't normally get chicken - this was an enormous heap of meat - it was pulled chicken breast, not some mystery chicken shapes fried up on a grill- with mounds and mounds of their "secret 3 cheese blend". i could barely finish a half of a large cheesesteak! (even the mini's were huge- and stuffed with meat!) our entire office's order was correct and was ready in a reasonable amount of time right around lunch time. They do not deliver, so we picked it up. I don't have any indicator of the service besides that the guy who took the order on the phone was super nice, and another guy that answered when we called back was a little short with my coworker. but hey, it was lunch time and probably busy.

These are some of the best (cheese) steaks and pizzas available in suburban Philadelphia. Unfortunately, you aren't open on Sunday -- especially while watching sports. It would be better for everybody craving a steak or pizza if you were closed all day Monday and Tuesday instead and it would be much better for your business. Wish you would fry fresh long hots too.

Still the best. We moved to NC 10 years ago and had to swing by for lunch. My kids don't remember coming here but agree these are the best cheesesteaks they ever had!

The best chicken cheese steak ever!!! I friend of mine suggested I check it out and I am sure glad I did! My life and stomach will never be the same. The chicken is crazy fresh and tastes like they just pulled apart the chicken. The bread is perfect. My fiance has requested one every week.

I haven't had these cheesesteaks in a long time, since childhood. I was in the area a few months ago and decided to order them for my family. They were blown away when I brought them home. They tasted just as good as I remembered, packed with meat, not skimpy at all. Even my teenage boys could only eat half at a time. Everyone enjoyed them!

By far the best Philly Cheesesteak in America. They still use the best thin sliced ribeye, and you can tell the difference. Their cheese blend is also fantastic. A heart attack waiting to happen, but worth it!

It's strange to say that the best cheesesteak in the Delaware Valley (so, the world) is found in Lower Merion. But, Mama's consistently serves the tastiest steak meat, the best cheese mix available for a cheesesteak, and a high-quality roll that neither overwhelms the sandwich nor gets soggy, and the portions are quite generous. Plus, believe it or not, Mama's steaks aren't *too* greasy.
(5)

I have been going to Mamas's for years. Last Friday I took some out of town guest to Mama's and they really enjoyed it. The meat is good quality. The portions are huge. Definitely the best steak in Philadelphia area. Be prepared to wait for your steak. Quality takes time. No french fries why? because their is so much sandwich to eat you couldn't possibly eat fries!!!!! Enjoy
(5)

The Philly cheesesteak here might actually be our favorite in the city. They are generous with the meat and the flavor is all there. We recently tried their pizza which is not NY style but is absolutely delicious and our new local favorite. The staff is friendly to us but are a little loud with their personal discussions which might not always have the best tone. We have only taken out so can't say anything about the waitstaff or seating, but I can say don't miss out this place!

The best cheesesteak Just go try one do not get onions or sauce or anything other than cheese and steak These are like a fine French food The meat and cheese are folded together and blend as one The best cheesesteak in the city or anywhere that I have ever been Try one You will be convinced

They make the best cheesesteaks almost in Philly. Warning: They are HUGE, get the mini. The cheesy goodness is unsurpassed. Pat's, Gino's and Jim's have nothing on Mama's.

Went on a hunt ( 6 different cheesesteaks in 3 days), pats, geno's, Jim's, delasandros, Phil's, and nothing even touches Mamas! NOTHING!!! Don't tell too many people as its small and slow cooking! Check the hrs, call ahead, as they are popular and sometimes have odd hours! BEST CHEESESTEAK EVER!! Going back today before our flight! Dr Ron

For me, among Philly's best cheesesteaks. Different from the rest - more cheese than steak. Perfect cheese, as long as you break the whiz mold (although this is the right choice elsewhere). Soft roll. As we know rolls are of paramount importance around here. Took them awhile to make, and half a sandwich should be sufficient for most for a meal. Unless you're a fat slob, then by all means get the full sandwich.

Ordered a mini, and a full sized cheesesteak. The portions here are fantastically large. The mini will suffice for most people. I ordered the full sized as I enjoy the practice of reheating food. Prices are fine, for what they give you. I want to say the full sized sandwich was $11, which isn't bad, considering it's at least two meals. The biggest problem is, I didn't care for their cheese blend. I understand how some may enjoy it, it just wasn't for me. Their not bashful with it, either. Maybe it was too fancy for me, maybe I don't have a refined palate, but I would've preferred straight American or provolone. I didn't feel the bread complimented the sandwich well. With all the gooey cheese, I would've preferred a roll with a little bit of crispness to it. This bread was like a soft French bread of sorts. It's run down inside, but I like that kind of ambiance. The guy working the front was great! He explained to me that they don't offer fries because they have no room for a fryer. He'd love to have one, though. Oh, yeah, the onions on the steak tasted really salty. It was odd. People love it here, it's just not for me.

This is the best cheesesteak anywhere. My husband found Mama's while attending Drexel in the mid-80's. We drive from South Jersey to Mama's monthly for cheesesteaks like no other. Good pizza and calzones, too.

Cheesesteak Pizza! Best of both worlds on the east coast, especially when you cant decide between a hoagie or pizza. Cooked to perfection and steak was top notch!

You don't go here for pizza. You go here for one of the city's most delicious and secret cheesesteaks. No need to pick a Cher, they top them all with their own secret blend of white cheese. It's huge, share with a friend. Get a side of red sauce, make it a large one, Mike and I could use the whole sauce ourselves.

The best cheese steaks, ever. Huge. Mouthwatering. Family owned place and the prices are right. But if you want to be healthy, try their chicken cheesesteak. It's a great family restaurant.

The Philly Cheesesteak that I had was the best sandwich I've had in a long time. The bread was awesome which is key in a cheesesteak. Working less than a block away could be hazardous to my health. The staff was friendly and it appears to be a popular spot. I highly recommend that you go and get a cheesesteak from Mama's.

Simply put, one of the biggest and best cheesesteaks I've ever had. I'm a big eater and a lot of times walk away disappointed after eating a skimpy cheesesteak, but you REALLY get your money's worth at Mama's. The cheesesteak was huge, the meat was delicious and juicy, and their homemade cheese blend was just amazing. This place is the real deal - quintessential Philly steaks with none of the flashiness and BS you can get downtown.

Yes, the pizzas are delicious, but Mama's stands alone atop the Cheese Streak World. Juicy, tender sliced steak folded together with the finest cheese on the freshest of rolls. Add your onions, peppers, gravy... however you like your cheesesteaks the best...you'll love these enormous, mouth-watering delights! Been to all the 'competition' in the city and all the 'burbs...there is simply nothing like a Mama's cheese steak.

Hands down, the best cheesesteaks in Philly. Size: Cheesesteaks (and strombolis, which are also great) are HUGE. I have an enormous appetite, always go for the full cheesesteak, and my stomach is always happy and content by meals end. For many people, half a sandwich or a junior would be enough for a full meal. You definitely get your money's worth. Roll: Wonderfully thick roll, and always tastes fresh. And with the way they cook their cheesesteaks, they actually take a few minutes to leave the bread on the sizzling meat and cheese, so the bread soaks up all the flavor, but in just the perfect amount so it's not sopping wet. Cheese: As many have commented, the cheese blend is the hallmark of a Mama's Cheesesteak. It's a secret recipe, but I'd imagine it's a mix of provolone, and possibly some chedder and American. Whatever the combination is, it's delicious, and unlike many other places, they are not shy about doling it out. These sandwiches explode with cheese, but in a perfect amount where it doesn't overwhelm the flavor of the meat. Meat: Always cooked to moist goodness so all the flavor is brought out, and the cook (family owned business, he's been there for years) makes sure to cook the cheese WITH the meat and onions, so they blend nicely, as opposed to other places where the cheese just gets slapped on at the end and they let it melt while in the bread. I live in DC now, but each time I come back to Philly I make it a point to stop by Mama's. Still haven't found a place that compares, and I have no idea why people still go to the overrated Pat's, Genos and Jim's when this place has by far the superior sandwich.

4.5 Stars **THIS REVIEW IS SPECIFICALLY IN REFERENCE TO MY PHILLY CHEESESTEAK TASTING ADVENTURE - Please refer to my review of Cosmi's Deli for background & stipulations of the quest** Ranking highest in roll texture, Mama's bread offers the perfect combination of soft chewiness and seeded hardiness. As the second place finisher, she takes the gold for largest cheesesteak of the bunch. Mamma's true strength, however, lies in her savory meat, onions, and cheese toppings (although not whiz). Mama's 8.2 scores her a second place finish and some definite respect. Although lacking the classic whiz, Mamma's outshines the competition for best roll and some freaking delicious meat filling. Best Philly Cheesesteaks in not just Philadelphia BUT probably the whole world. I'm not exaggerating. Also, they are the nicest people that work in there. Pat's, Gino's who?!?!? This is THE place. Hours are a bit whacky but it is kinda like 'if you build it...they will come' mentality. People will come whenever the hours :) Call ahead for quicker pick up but I recommend eating it on the spot.

I am originally from Philly and got to have lunch there a few days ago on a business trip. Had a cheesesteak. I don't think they have a deep fryer, so you have to get bags of Herr's chips. Not being able to get those regularly, I was ok with that. If you're in a group, it pays to get the large bag and share. The steak itself was very good. The difference in size between the mini and the original is not that much. The original size is massive. If you're real hungry, go for it. Otherwise, I almost had a food coma from it... I'm not a small man, either... Wait staff is very friendly. I'd recommend eating there if you're in the area.

Disclaimer: I write this lengthy narrative in order to save others time, money and disappointment. I was planning to go to John's Roast Pork, but the traffic on I-76 started to annoy me. Took an exit and stopped by here. My friend in the car next to me said his friend loved this place and their cheesesteak. What. I feel betrayed. Everything about this place (judging from my experience) is awful. Ordered cheesesteak to split with my friend (reviews said it was big portion). OK, it was big. BUT, it is the most tasteless cheesesteak I have ever tried. Not even "one of" the worst. THE worst. This is coming from an enthusiast, a purist, who has tried this Philly delicacy from so many joints. I urge you to not read the positive reviews about the cheesesteaks on this site and go to STEVE'S PRINCE OF STEAKS. Way too cheesy.. the cheese is bland. The meat is too chopped up and not seasoned at all. The bread tastes like pizza dough. The onions are saltier than sardines. I took two bites. First to test the waters. Second, because I believe in second chances. Nope. Threw it out and left. No words to the workers. They had no words too, probably because they didn't care. The decor is just scary. Wet, ripped up seat cushions. Deteriorating wall paper. An over powered ceiling fan that looks like it is about to fly off and cut us to pieces. I asked for a soda and the waitress went into the back and pulled out a bottle and placed it on the table next to me. Didn't even hand it to me. I didn't even know she "gave" it to me until I looked at the table (which I wasn't sitting at at the time) and noticed it. But, this place is called Mama's Pizzeria. Maybe their pizza is good... But I saw another patron with a pizza and it looked comparable to Papa Johns.

Mama's has that matronly feel to it, insofar as it feels like visiting your grandmother's house. It's out of the way, tiny, and decorated with floral trim, Tiffany stained glass lights, and the clown paintings that gave you nightmares as a kid. The people here are also welcoming and give you significantly more food than you could ever eat -- or should eat, anyway. If you order a cheesesteak and do not specify that you want the Mini, you will get at least a pound of meat mixed with enough cheese to top a large pizza. Grease will pour out of the back of your sandwich when you lift it up. It's revolting and intoxicating. At $10.25, it's also expensive. However, you get what you pay for, both literally and figuratively. That faint sound you hear in the background is me doubled over in pain, howling.

the best anywhere---fresh filet tips. real cheese. dated decor. call ahead and pick up to eat there. on the weekends, always a wait. everything made to oreder, if you want pre-cooked or cheap grub, go to Gino's, Pat's , or any other frozen chipped steak castle.

For starters this place has the best Philly cheesesteak by far! The bread is amazing and the price dor what you get is unmatched! The only reason this is not a five star is due to the shop being closed on Sunday and Monday with limited hours on Tuesday. The decor does not match the taste and there is one HORRIBLE waitress that works there! Gotta love Mama's still!

Rumor has it that Public Enemy's Chuck D penned "Don't Believe the Hype" after local lore led him to Mama's on his search for the best cheesesteak in Philadelphia. While this story may be apocryphal (read: I just made it up), it is the case that the anthemic chorus of the song should be played in response to someone telling you that Mama's has the best cheesesteak in the area. I made a special trip to Bala Cynwyd on mission to confirm of debunk this rumor, Myth Busters style. First stop: bank -- Mama's is cash only. I wouldn't quite say "strike 1" here, but cash-only is annoying. The first thing that caught my eye upon entering was the high prices on the menu board. The larger size cheesesteak hoagie (the size of a regular Lee's steak) was $11.50! A regular cheesesteak was almost $10. My wife decided to go with the mini cheesesteak (about the size of a shorty from Wawa), and given that I could try hers, I decided to get the Italian hoagie. The service model is configured like your standard pizzeria: order at counters, they bring the food out to you, pay when you're finished. And the lady who took our order and served us was very pleasant. Believe it or not, the hoagie was the star of the show -- the cheesesteak was really sub-par, in my opinion. It was under-seasoned and over-cheesed (yes, the latter is possible). The provolone drowned out the taste of the meat completely. The hoagie, way more reasonably priced at $7 for a large, was pretty good -- nice bread, fresh toppings, etc. So, while nothing about the experience was bad, and I wouldn't be opposed to going here again (if I were in the area), I don't think you should make a pilgrimage here. Dalessandro's is only minutes away, and they, I do believe, have the best steak in the area. And next time someone tells you they heard that Mama's has the best steak, break out your boombox and let Flava Flav answer that person: DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE!

I'm not a Philly native, but, after living here for awhile and sampling the city's cheesesteak offerings, I can say this with certainty: Mama's serves the best cheesesteak I've had in Philly. It's simply fantastic. The pizza is decent too. Sure, the decor is lacking, but that ain't what they're selling! The staff are unpretentious but friendly. All in all, a great place to go for a quick bite or a take-away order, not to mention a must-visit for those interested in the art of the cheesesteak.

Must stop on the Philly cheesesteak tour. It is unique and must be tried. It might not be your favorite, it isn't mine but it's worth the money. Tons of cheese tons of grease but it's a cheesesteak so get over it.

Love the cheesesteaks here . They are done differently than most other places, so purists might be disappointed. Lots and lots of cheese, and the meat and cheese are cooked slowly on the grill so that it becomes a delicious, gooey mess. I order a small, as the larges are just too much to finish. That said, I usually get a meatball sandwich here. The meatballs and the sauce alone make it delicious, but the cheese they use to top it makes it out-of-this-world. It's also not as filling as the cheesesteak, so I get the large.

OK, I don't get it. How the heck did this joint "earn" (and I use that term loosely) a Best of Philly for their cheesesteak? Honestly, does the whole of the Philadelphia cheesesteak community have absolutely no tastebuds whatsoever? Here's how we ended up at Mama's today. We were going to head to a little joint in Conshohoken for lunch, but traffic getting off 76 was completely backed up and I didn't feel like sitting there for 30 min trying to get off (of the highway not, well....perverts) at Conshy, so we kept going towards the city. I remembered a friend told me of this place Mama's off Belmont had the best cheesesteaks in Philly. So, since I would trust a friends recommendation over most others we decided to pop in. Had no idea they were a best of Philly until I read their menu so that didn't factor into the decision. Anyway, we head upstairs and grab a table. Our server (who was super pleasant considering she was going non-stop by herself in a full restaurant) came right over and handed us menus. It's not a huge list, mainly sandwiches and pizza but we knew what we wanted. I ordered a regular (which, at $11ish per sandwich is a rip-off, seriously) and she ordered a mini. My suggestion is if you decide to head there with your better half or a friend, just order a regular and split it. The best part of this cheesesteak honestly is the roll. It's really one of the best rolls that I've had recently. Crust was golden brown and crisp with the inside being spongy and perfect for holding the grease fest it was about to be filled with. I don't know what kind of meat they use, but it was one of the greasiest cheesesteaks I've ever had. A few other reviews were also spot on with the blandness of this cheesesteak. It had almost no flavor. Salt and pepper are necessities if you are going to have one of these. The cheese (some blend which seemed like a provolone, american, and mozzarella but not 100% sure) was good, but they are a little too generous with it. A good cheesesteak should have a balance between cheese and steak. This was was cheesier than Dave F. and JIm H after a night of binge drinking. Just too much. So, the bottom line here is Mama's just isn't worth the drive out to Belmont from the burbs. There are so many other places with better offerings that I wouldn't bother heading out here again. Bummer....

I have been going to Mama's for almost 20 years, and as a life-long Philly resident, I can say that it is one of my favorite cheesesteaks! The bread is so fresh, the steak is tender, and the blended cheeses add a great dimension of flavor. Recently, however, I have really enjoyed getting the Buffalo Chicken Cheesesteak. Usually, I'll go with a friend and we'll order 1 of each and split them.

You can't go wrong with the place. I had game night at my home 2 weeks ago and ordered cheesesteaks and cheese pizza from Mama's. All of my friends raved about the cheesesteaks and pizza. The food was inhaled by everyone. Mama's has the best cheesesteaks and pizza in the Philly area.

Awesome cheesesteaks that are worth every bit of the ten dollar price tag. Tip to first timers, share one with a friend! You'll get one kind of cheese, their house special mix, and you won't be disappointed. Top four chesesteak in Philly, along w Johns Roast Pork, Dalassandro's, and Jim's on 62nd Street

When I first moved to Philly, I had told my boss about a recent trip to Pat's for cheesesteaks. He scoffed at my having taken a friend from out of town to Pat's -- that's not a real cheesesteak, he said. Now I was new to Philly, but I knew enough about the Pat's and Gino's rivalry for the best cheesesteak in Philly to know what I had was a real cheesesteak -- or so I thought. My boss wanted to show me a "real" cheesesteak so he took me to Mama's. He warned me though that after having a Mama's cheesesteak, no other cheesesteak will be the same. Yeah, yeah, yeah, whatevs, Mr. Bossman. No, no, he was right. Their cheesesteaks are tender and well seasoned and the cheese oozes onto them. It's not like other manufacturing-line cheesesteak places where they grill the meat, slap some cheese on it and serve it to you. At Mama's, the meats and cheeses and onions mix together and the juices meld together to make pure deliciousness. I always get a junior, which is way more than enough food for me. Some of the boys I've gone with have gotten the full-size ones, which are huge. But it's breakfast, lunch, and dinner -- embrace it. Anyway, the boss was right - after you've gone Mama's, there's no going back. Every out-of-town guest I've had in Philly, I've taken to more conveniently located places -- Pat's, Gino's, Jim's, Steve's, Campo's, Ishkabibble's. Nothing compares (cue Sinead O'Connor). They're really just not worth it. So this weekend, had a friend in from DC with a car and a craving for cheesesteaks. So I took advantage of his wheels, and we went out to Mama's. And it was everything I remembered....

My Brother had been coming here forever and raves about this place. He goes out of his way on trips just to cone here for the cheesesteaks. He finally brought me here and told me to order the "Mini" which is not that mini, but the perfect size cheesesteak. Meat, bread, cheese, sauce, veggies all in the right amounts to make one of the best cheesesteaks around. Nice place, cosy Italian pizza/sub shop.

This baby is dense. There's pounds of meat, and the melted provolone pours over the helpless amoroso roll. Easily the biggest cheesesteak in town (by weight). And the taste? Pretty good. They sweat the onions, and it helps to give the sandwich a deeper flavor than the sweetness you sometimes get from carmelized onions. The meat is fine, and the cheese is on the tangy side of mild. As for the restaurant, it's lovingly cared for and looks like it was decorated by someone's grandmother. In the summer they keep the AC set at around 54 degrees, which is a good thing - becuse this is the kind of sandwhich that will make you sweat.

Damn, that cheesesteak was good! (licks fingers greedily!) Just left Mama's and got a chicken cheesesteak. Was totally surprised when the guy at the counter told me they didn't sell fries. Okay... no problem. They sell chips. No fountain sodas?? I hesitated. I really hate sodas out of a can/bottle with no ice. Decided to roll with the punches since my friend Jeff hyped this place up so much and ordered a bottle of coke. To my surprise, my order came to $16. HUH??????????????????????Awfully steep, considering I didn't get any fries!!! Left there feeling kinda pissed. When I took my sandwich out of the bag, the first thing I noticed was how heavy the sandwich felt. Heavier than cheesesteaks I get at any other place. Then I unwrapped it and bit into it. DELICIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was absolutely the best chicken cheesesteak I have EVER had!!! Seriously! I have no idea why this thing was so good, but I'm guessing it must be the cheese. It has just the right amount!! You know how at some places, you might lift your roll and wonder if they forgot to put cheese on your sandwich?? Not here. You will definitely see and taste the cheese. And what kind of cheese IS that? Yummmmmy!!!!!!!!!!!! It didn't taste like any kind of provolone cheese I've ever had. I'm not b.s.-ing you when I tell you that it was the most perfect cheesesteak ever. Oh... and it was HUGE!!! I ate half and felt like a fat pig!! lol I can't believe I've lived right down the street from this place and never tried it. I will absolutely be back there. Five WELL-DESERVED stars!!!!!

Operation Cheesesteak is in full effect. The test? Who has the best cheesesteak based upon just Provolone, Steak and Bread. The conditions? I have to be famished. Half gets eaten in the car, half gets eaten at home. This rating is based only on the cheesesteak, so no other elements of the restaurant (customer service, ambiance, etc) are factored in to this. So how did Mama's steak do? Let me break it down for you. The construction of the steak was cheese melted into pulverized steak placed on a roll. And it was amazing. This meat, even without the generous amount of cheese they put on this steak, was moist, tasty and gristle free. The bread was good too. And let me tell you, if you are someone (like me) whose second hope for death is to die halfway through a cheese plate (my first hope for death is during sex, fyi) ... you will dig this steak. If you're not a fan of 'death by cheese' then this might not be the steak for you. Also, I ordered the "mini" steak, but don't let the name fool you. Although shorter and squatter than other steaks, this thing (for me) was a monster. And it was a decent price. Not the cheapest steak on the block, but not as expensive as some of the steaks out in south philly. If you're in the Manayunk area and looking for a steak (except on Sundays and Mondays) and you love cheese. I recommend this one. (If you're not a fan of ridiculous amounts of cheese, hit up Dalessandros). This is definitely a 5 star steak, but I think that Tony Luke's still has a slight edge. Despite my love of cheese, when I ate the 2nd half slightly cold, Mama's steak was not as good as Tony Luke's slightly cold steak.

Avoid this place like a prostitute avoids church. I grew up in Philadelphia and have devoured many-a-cheesesteak over the years but this one by far takes the cake for worst sandwich in my book. I ordered a regular cheesesteak from here thinking that my first bad experience with the chicken cheesesteak was just a fluke. Boy, was I wrong. It was exactly how I remembered it. Honestly, the cheesesteak was disgusting. In fact, I wouldn't call this a cheesesteak, I'd just call it a "cheese sandwich." There was so much cheese on this thing that it completely overpowered everything else. I even managed to shovel-off about an inch and half of the cheese on to my plate and there was still a ridiculous amount of the gooey stuff left on the sandwich. Gross. I couldn't bring myself to finishing half of it. Oh yeah, it was $11+ for one of these. Are you kidding? You're better off going to Wawa.

The urban legend that Mama's pizzeria has the best cheesesteaks in the Philly area has been flying around for years. Today, was the day I decided to tackle the folklore and continue my quest to find awesome cheesesteaks. My husband and I began our pilgrimage to Mama's with a quick stop at the ATM (cash only) and a whole car rides worth of conversation about how awesome these cheesesteaks are going to be. My excitement level was soaring......a juicy cheesesteak, what else could be better on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. There is not much to the place......outdated wallpaper and creepy clown pictures cover the interior walls. The ordering area is cramped and surrounded by a few tables and chairs. Not a big deal considering I was going to get one awesome cheesesteak! I stepped up to the counter to order a mini (6inch) cheesesteak with onions and provolone cheese. The sandwich was delivered to my table and I began to take my first bites. Unfortunately, reality hit me hard......there was too much bread, not enough seasoning (pass the salt and pepper), and way way WAY to much cheese on the steak, it was overpowering. One silver lining of the cheesesteak cloud is that the onions were sweet and tasty and fried to a golden goodness. Other misses were that they only have bottled beverages, no fountain drinks here and the price........pretty exorbitant as compared to other places in the area. Sadly, I left....my expectations were not met...not even close. Maybe I went on an off day seeing as most of the other reviews were so positive.

Awesome, awesome cheesesteak! Easily the best I've ever had. To give an indication...when I was in college in Washington DC we would take these random trips to Atlantic City (always seemed like a great idea when the bars were shutting down). And for some reason none of us thought twice about making the detour on the way back to pick up steaks from Mama's and tea cooler (from some other place). Of course the winner would always pay.

Momma's is my number one favorite cheesesteak in all the land. That is all I need to say about it.

I've always said that the best cheesesteaks are found outside of Philly. Mama's is living proof of that. I had my first Mama's cheesesteak in 15 years yesterday and it was even better than I remembered it. Mama's is far superior to anything I've ever had in downtown Philly - and most other places quite frankly. The only other place that came close was the, now defunct, Luigi's in Wildwood, NJ. Unless you want to take a nap afterwards, get the mini. Can't believe I've waited so long to go back.

Really superb cheesesteaks. Really superb. Sharp provolone, bursting with meat and cheese, all mixed together into some kind of super cheese-meat-cheese-meat deliciousness. The rest of their menu is fine, but their steaks are where they shine. Do yourself a favor and fast for a little and then grab the large cheesesteak. No delivery. Odd that they don't have one. Hours are weird. Check before driving out. No Frialator. Side dishes are spartan at best or bagged chips. The dining room is split: downstairs is spartan and stereotypical "pizza takeout joint" with Formica booths and tables. Upstairs is... bizarre. Doilies, tablecloths, richly attired in pink tones. I felt as if I had wandered into a bizarro pizza shop before slowly backing away to more familiar (and less frilly) surroundings. Under no circumstances are you to look at the clown paintings for any length of time. I cannot stress this final point strongly enough- do not look at them if possible. All being said, I still eat their cheesesteaks. They are very, very good.

The cheesesteaks are good, but I don't understand the hype. The roll was fresh (not amaroso's) & the cheese (their 'own blend') was good. But the steak itself was dry & the overall experience of the place not so great. The seating upstairs is peculiar in a 'I'm going to get whacked by a member of the Sopranos" sort of way. Definitely the best cheese steak around City Ave, but in the city? definitely not.

One of the best, if not the best cheesesteak I ever had. We got a steak with provolone, and chicken cheesesteak too. The meat was cooked to perfection and the cheese actually seemed to be decent, compared to a lot of the crap you see in cheesesteaks. There wasn't too much cheese, and the steak wasn't greasy at all. The bun was also very fresh and large! Overall, I can highly recommend the cheesesteaks at Mama's.

I've been burned. Burned twice, mind you, and I was unsure if I was ever getting back on the proverbial cheesesteak horse. But hop back on I did and I'm so glad! Cheesesteak #1 on 11/13/10 on South Street (not Jim's b/c line out the door so went across the street) was with Cheeze Whiz. It was awful. I kept wiping away the grease on my lips after every bite and I'm sure my lips glistened in the sun for a while after. Cheesesteak #2 was at Jim's on South Street (no line on 7/22/11 because of the gawd-awful heat index), again with the Whiz, and was just okay. I couldn't figure out if it was my tastebuds or what, but I was distraught. Finally, I was back in Philly again this past weekend and my cousins who live in Manayunk took me to Mama's Pizzeria. I was advised to order a Mini and get Mama's blended cheese. I also ordered onions on the side, a move I regret since I wished they had been on the sandwich itself. The bread is perfect for a cheesesteak, hearty and able to hold everything together without getting soggy, but not too tough. The steak is delicious with just the right amount of seasoning. There is plenty of meat on this Mini! The onions are silky smooth, cooked to perfection. Now on to the star - the cheese! Our waitress said it was kind of like pizza cheese. A good start to a description but it's so much more! It's ooey-gooey goodness. There was enough for every bite and then some. As you begin to eat, steak and cheese oozes out the bottom, which can make for a quick snack between bites LOL. Bottom line - this sandwich will be in my dreams for years to come. My cousins will not be alloweed to move! I would have given 5 stars to Mama's but the decor is outdated. Some call it grandmotherly but it's really just 80s interior decorating that has gone untouched and unupdated for decades. And it's sort of peeling off the walls in some places. Still the best cheesesteak I ever had though.

The food is good, but their cheesesteaks are amazing. I'd give them 5 stars just for cheesesteaks alone. They have two sizes--regular ($12-13) and their mini (about $7). The prices might seem a little steep, but you're getting a lot of 'steak' for your money. Their 'mini' is really like a medium or large at other restaurants. NOTE, you have to like a decent amount of cheese on your sandwich (why else would you be ordering a cheesesteak?). If you are a 'wit' person, you'll find that their onions will melt in your mouth. The bread is tasty and keeps everything together. That said, it's still a messy sandwich due to size and volume. You should also sample their chicken cheesesteak and their vegetarian hoagie on other visits. You'll have a hard time finishing one of their regular cheesesteaks, and you'll probably feel aweful about yourself for doing it. If you have leftovers, they reheat really well in the oven. Especially since the bread will get a little crispy and add a nice crunch to the sandwich. That would be my only improvement on their sandwich. That they should toast the bread a little more before serving. The downfall of this place is definitely their hours. Not open on Sundays or Mondays, and only 11-3 on Tuesdays. A little weak in my book. Also, it'd be nice if they had a voicemail that informed you when they would be closed for extended periods of time. Not sure if they're still cash only, so bring plenty just in case. Cheers.

They have far and away the best steaks I have ever had. I split a chicken cheesesteak hoagie and a mushroom pizza steak (sauce on the side) with a friend. The total for these two items came to $23. I still think this is pretty pricey, but the portion sizes are huge and I guess the price is justifiable, but if it was a little cheaper, I woulda given 5 stars for sure. Again, the staees are amazing, absolutely delicious. You must try it to believe it. When I first look at them you will think the consumption would be a daunting task, but once you start chewing on it you, they disappear too quickly. Good to the last bite. The place is pretty small, I would call ahead. And they are closed on Sunday and Mondays. The food travels well, we waited half an hour to eat the steaks at my house. And they were still hot and succulent.

Totally disappointed. I've been hearing about how amazing the cheesesteaks are here, and I have to say that I can't believe how many good reviews this place has. All of the negative reviews about this place are spot on. The meat is bland and severely in need of salt and pepper. The provolone is piled on top and adds to the lack of flavor. $11.82 for a cheasesteak is utterly insane and this is certainly not worth it. The woman behind the counter was a total bitch and people who walked in several minutes after me had their orders before mine. 25 minutes to make a cheesesteak? Seriously? Skip this place for sure, I know I'll never be back.

I should've read the reviews first, and just ordered one... I pass this place every time I go to the gym, but due to their wacky hours I hadn't yet tried their legendary steaks. So the other night I'm fresh off burning a few hundred calories...what better way to make up for it than packing on a few thousand? I called in my order of two cheesesteaks (onions, mushrooms, hot peppers). When I got to the counter, the lady told me I owed her $24 and change...WTF?! I hadn't ordered gold leaves to be shaken over my steak! The lady noted my confusion and slid the bag over to me. The thing weighed as much as a newborn child! "Oh," I mumbled, paid up (cash only) and carried my beef child out to the car. Upon unwrapping the paper, I was met with a wall of meat and cheese that someone apparently tried to stuff into the bread, but failed. The meat was of a good quality, and they use their own special cheese blend which separates Mama's from the others. Their bread was the best I've had on any steak anywhere. After it's all said and done, though, I still prefer Larry's Steaks. They just have more flavor. Mama's hot peppers weren't at all hot, and the whole package just didn't have as many tastes going on as Larry's. Still pretty damn good though. Order your meat baby today, and don't forget to find someone to split it with.

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.
Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.
Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

(5)Richard. F.
The dining room feels like I'm at home in some old Italians house. The steaks are great but the root beer is flat.
(4)Jan K.
(3)Steve B.
(5)B. H.
Don't bother. A tasteless mess.
(1)Bizz M.

(3)C V.
(4)Marguerite M.
(2)Big E.
One of my favorite cheesesteak places in the area. Pizza is okay, nothing great. Odd hours, spotty service, but awesome cheesesteak.

(5)Kristen M.
(5)Michael P.
Maybe my favorite cheesesteak, and I am a lifetime Philadelphian. Never had anything else there, but have had many cheesesteaks. Pure bliss. Oh, and the restaurant itself is a hole in the wall... But who cares? Mmmmm, Mama's.
(5)mike v.
(5)Louie M.
(5)Oliver J.
Been going here for years.. It's like a gourmet steak of steak shops...friendly staff, nice clean and quaint sit down area in the back.. Loveeee it here!!
(5)Christian O.
I went back last Friday and this place is still the Mecca of cheesesteak. Just saying.
(5)Andrew C.
(2)Sander D.
It will be hard to go back to another cheesesteak after having one of these! Excellant!!
(5)Alex H.
Quick and friendly staff, had some hoagies, everything was fresh but will have to try the cheesesteaks next time, I think there are better hoagies for the $$ out there.
(3)Chris ..
(1)Thomas I.
I will continue to look for the best cheesesteaks in the philly area. These were huge cheesesteaks but not the best. The cheesesteak was also a little pricey in my opinion. Almost $15 for an original cheesesteak
(3)Eric S.
(5)Steve L.
The cheesesteaks are huge and very tasty. The fresh rolls, cheese blend and substantial portion of beef are hallmarks of this tasty Main Line favorite. Pizza is also good... I've taken out food from here dozens of times in recent years and have never been disappointed.
(5)Christine L.
(2)Adri T.
(1)Erin G.
This is the Philadelphia Cheesesteak. The only one for me. I've been lucky enough to have cut my teeth here. However, 42 years later they still rock. And more. Put on seatbelts! !! This is what you've been waiting for!!!
(5)Erin B.
ordered takeout for our entire office from here upon our boss's recommendation.
(4)S S.
(5)Scott B.
Still the best. We moved to NC 10 years ago and had to swing by for lunch. My kids don't remember coming here but agree these are the best cheesesteaks they ever had!
(5)Ebony M.
The best chicken cheese steak ever!!! I friend of mine suggested I check it out and I am sure glad I did! My life and stomach will never be the same. The chicken is crazy fresh and tastes like they just pulled apart the chicken. The bread is perfect. My fiance has requested one every week.
(5)Lauren G.
(4)Jake L.
By far the best Philly Cheesesteak in America. They still use the best thin sliced ribeye, and you can tell the difference. Their cheese blend is also fantastic. A heart attack waiting to happen, but worth it!
(5)Peter K.
(5)Delvia W.
Enjoy
(5)Erin W.
(5)Jack S.
The best cheesesteak Just go try one do not get onions or sauce or anything other than cheese and steak These are like a fine French food The meat and cheese are folded together and blend as one The best cheesesteak in the city or anywhere that I have ever been Try one You will be convinced
(5)Danielle I.
They make the best cheesesteaks almost in Philly. Warning: They are HUGE, get the mini. The cheesy goodness is unsurpassed. Pat's, Gino's and Jim's have nothing on Mama's.
(5)Ron S.
Dr Ron
(5)Keisha F.
Amazing chicken cheesesteak (I don't eat beef). Not greasy, plenty of meat and cheese! Soo worth it!
(5)Jim I.
I now live in Florida, but come back once in awhile..never miss a chance for a mamas steak..knew original owners and the son still has the best steaks anywhere..
(5)Dave S.
Greatest cheesesteaks of all time. I absolutely love this place. I just wish they didn't have such wacky, random hours of operation.
(5)Brian M.

(2)Stephanie G.
This is the best cheesesteak anywhere. My husband found Mama's while attending Drexel in the mid-80's. We drive from South Jersey to Mama's monthly for cheesesteaks like no other. Good pizza and calzones, too.
(5)Heather Z.
Cheesesteak Pizza! Best of both worlds on the east coast, especially when you cant decide between a hoagie or pizza. Cooked to perfection and steak was top notch!
(5)Tanna F.
(5)David A.
The BEST cheesesteaks in all of Philly! Been coming here since the 1980s.
(5)Tom B.
Love the steak pizza here!
(3)Carol L.
The best cheese steaks, ever. Huge. Mouthwatering. Family owned place and the prices are right. But if you want to be healthy, try their chicken cheesesteak. It's a great family restaurant.
(5)Aparicio G.
(4)Mike L.
(5)David R.
(5)Dave C.
Best in the world. Yes the world.
(5)Dave T.

(5)Jonathan I.

(4)bill e.
the best anywhere---fresh filet tips. real cheese. dated decor. call ahead and pick up to eat there. on the weekends, always a wait. everything made to oreder, if you want pre-cooked or cheap grub, go to Gino's, Pat's , or any other frozen chipped steak castle.
(5)Keron M.

(5)Spurgeon R.
Must stop on the Philly cheesesteak tour. It is unique and must be tried. It might not be your favorite, it isn't mine but it's worth the money. Tons of cheese tons of grease but it's a cheesesteak so get over it.
(4)Oliver P.
(4)Chris V.
Bummer....

I love this place every time I come here the food is always delicious and the dishes are the cleanest dishes around
(5)Joe W.
(4)Loni N.
(5)Powell A.
(5)Adina R.
(5)Jeff C.
(4)John K.
(5)Robyn H.

(2)Aboud Y.
(5)Ray F.
Momma's is my number one favorite cheesesteak in all the land. That is all I need to say about it.
(5)David D.
(5)Jeff L.
(4)John M.
(3)Alex V.
(4)Shannon S.

Years go by , this place stays consistently great. Something for all, love cheesesteaks but always share the veggie steak it rocks. Well worth the trip off of the surekill expressway, no matter how bad the traffic !o
